Google Tool Launched To Help Japan Tsunami Victims

japan tsunamiFollowing the recent earthquake/tsunami in Japan, Google has released a version of its Person Finder service to help people find victims or report on their whereabouts. The Person Finder will work as a Web directory and message board where people can either look for lost friends and relatives or leave a note to confirm their safety. The system, which was very useful after other recent natural disasters like the Haiti and New Zealand earthquake, has been designed to be embedded on Websites and social network pages so as to reach as many people and aid agencies as possible.

Already, the Japan quake Person Finder logged and was tracking over 7,200 records in the first few hours following the earthquake. The usefulness of these tools cannot be overemphasised particularly because the magnitude (8.9) of the earthquake means that thousands of people would be displaced.Tsunami alerts have been issued for other countries including, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, New Zealand, and others with more strong waves expected. Meanwhile, Web users who would like to donate to victims are advised to do so with only trusted and reliable sources as scammers are unfortunately known to usually take advantage of these  kind of situations to trick unsuspecting donors to part with their money.

PLEASE NOTE: All data entered on the people finder will be available to the public and viewable and usable by anyone. Google does not review or verify the accuracy of this data.

I was watching th Tsunami hit in Japan live on BBC. Fire and the flood at the same time in Japan, Once again nature had reacted badly. Japan being in the very vulnarable zone for Tsunami should prepare themselves well in the future. I believe the death toll is more than 500, and quite a lot of people are affected.

I’m usually a Google hater, but I gotta admit, Google is doing some good by unleashing this tool at such a critical time.

What a great idea. At this time many people are trying to get in touch with loved ones in Japan and anything that can assist is worthwhile.

I applaud Google for what they’re doing. I can only imagine how stressful it must be to separated from your loved ones, not knowing you they’re okay.

I’ll be sure to say a prayer tonight for everyone who has been effected by the earthquake.

I watch news on Euronews every hour. Tha’t horrible!!! Especially the risk of nuclear explosion… And I think any help now will be great, but Google service allows people to share the info in one place. I..I..just don’t enough words to express what I feel.

Clap to Google. It’s crazy to see and read about all the aid that will be for Japan. Google provides so much information on their site so this is a great tool for those who have friends and family in Japan.
