7 Facts You Should Know About RSS

When it comes to blogging and RSS there are two main categories of users – those who understand how RSS works and those who do not understand. Although there is a lot to write about knowledgeable users of RSS, I will focus on the other category of RSS users .

With the recent surge in number of blogs on the Internet today, one should not be surprised that the number of bloggers  who, like their users, do not know the basics of RSS and still wonder how they can increase the number of subscribers on their RSS feed, are increasing daily.  The following are 10 basic facts every blogger and Web user should know about RSS.the basics of RSS and still wonder how they can increase the number of subscribers on their RSS feed

  1. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication – a technology that makes it possible for Web users, who are fond of a particular Web site, to keep track of its latest content.
  2. In order to receive RSS updates, users must subscribe to the Web site’s RSS/News Feed by email or through a Feed aggregator/reader.
  3. A Feed aggregator/reader, also known as News aggregator/reader, is a Web application that allows syndicated contents such as RSS Feeds and news headlines to be collected, processed and displayed in a single location for easy viewing, for example, BlogLines, My Yahoo, Google Reader and Firefox via the “Live Bookmark” feature.
  4. Bloggers must be registered to a Feed management and distribution service, such as Feedburner, in order to syndicate and broadcast updated content from their site to subscribers’ Feed aggregator.
  5. Although Feedburner is the leading Feed management provider, it is not the only organisation that provides this service. Web publishers who do not want to use Feedburner’s services may also consider, Feedoor, FeedBlitz, Feedity and RapidFeeds.
  6. The universal Feed icon, nicknamed chicklet, is a term for the orange buttons used as links to RSS files (text, audio or video) which users can subscribe to with a Feed aggregator.
  7. Browser-based Feed aggregators make it possible to subscribe to RSS Feeds from any computer unlike downloadable aggregators. Some browsers such as Firefox, Opera and Safari will automatically check for Feeds when you visit a Web site, and display the orange Feed icon when they find one in order to make subscribing to Feeds easier.

I like the Google Reader. I use that to sort and view my feed subscriptions. It shows me how many new posts there are, how many are still unread, etc. It’s not fancy but it’s easy to use and easy to read from.

Love RSS! Search engines love fresh content and thus visit these aggregator sites more frequently than static sites. This results to more prominent ranking, meaning more people will find your content.
